Join the green wave with eco-friendly tableware

Sustainability is one of the hottest topics among HoReCa businesses right now. If you want to join the green wave, there are plenty of opportunities to choose from.

Labels and certifications guide the way

It can be difficult to navigate the many options when it comes to decorating an eco-friendly table. Internationally recognized third party labels and certificates are a good place to start.

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel certifications can be found on many products in many different categories, including disposable napkins and tablecloths made of paper.

When choosing a napkin or tablecloth product with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and/or the EU Ecolabel, you will get one of the most eco-friendly products on the market. Both certifications are your guarantee that the product is of high quality, produced in an eco-friendly manner, and that a large amount of the material in napkins and tablecloths are made of sustainable forestry or recycled paper.

Nordic ecolabel

The FSCTM (Forest Stewardship Council) certificate
FSC is an international ecolabeling organization that deals with tree and forest products. To obtain the FSCTM (Forest Stewardship Council)  certification, the product has to fulfill strict requirements, including:

The product is made from materials from protected and sustainable forests, where only the volume which can be produced is harvested. By doing so, the number of forests is maintained.

The people working in the forests do so with proper working conditions in correlation to safety and economy.

If biodegradability is important to you, look for products with the DIN CERTCO label. Products with DIN CERTCO are tested for biodegradability according to European Standard EN 13432, which sets the standard for testing of products and packaging materials according to their ability to biodegrade.

Disposable tableware – alternatives to traditional plastic

If you work in a business where using single-use tableware is an advantage or necessity, you don’t have to worry – you can easily find and choose eco-friendly single-use products. Traditionally, single-use tableware has been associated with plastic, which has experienced a bad reputation in recent years.

However, the market for single-use tableware has gone through huge developments in recent years, giving the market plenty of new, green opportunities. Products made from palm leaves, sugar cane bagasse and PLA are some of the new alternatives to traditional plastic, just as eco-labeling and certificates make it easier to navigate the market of sustainable choices.

Lighting in an eco-friendly perspective

Lights can be a fantastic way to set a warm and cozy atmosphere in your restaurant, café, or inn. But if you aim for jumping on the green wave, your choice of lighting can have a great effect on how green your table is going to be.

Traditional candles and oil candles affect the indoor environment because of the emission of smoke, and the emission of CO2 from traditional candles affects the environment as well. This emission can be reduced by choosing candles with the Nordic Ecolabel or by choosing battery-driven LED lights for your table.

If you want to maintain the cozy feeling from a real flame, a Nordic Swan Ecolabeled product can be a great alternative. Even though the eco-labeled candles produce smoke, the total consumption of CO2 becomes neutral because the raw materials in these candles must have obtained CO2 during their cultivation.

An extra bonus to choosing Nordic Swan Eco-labeled candle products is that the ecolabel becomes your guarantee that your products are free from a wide range of chemicals for instance, perfume, fragrance, heavy metals, and phthalates.
